“EVERYONE SAY, ‘REVOLUTION!’ “
No one says a damn thing.
He tries again. Louder.
“EVERYONE SAY, ‘REVOLUTION!!’ “
Silence.
I kinda felt bad for him, but I was not about to stand in a bookstore screaming, “REVOLUTION!” when I didn’t even know what he was revolting against. Try giving us some context next time, bro! Like, I mean, what if he is revolting against women who couldn’t care less about a bookstore revolution, and everyone decides to jump me? I’d be a damn fool yelling, “REVOLUTION!” and supporting my own beat-down.
He gives the revolution pitch one more go, except this last time, he held the mike head right in this middle-aged lady’s face after he shouted his plea. She looked terrified and peeped out, “Um . . . Revolution!”
I thought I would pee on myself. She had this startled, frightened look on her face like when you’re daydreaming and a teacher calls your name to answer a question. Naw, her look was worse. Like one hundred times worse. A crazy, vague revolutionary just screamed and shoved a microphone in her face. After that she was probably too scared to read any of her poems about baking cookies. Or whatever her poem was going to be about. Forest animals. Oprah Winfrey. Her grandkids. Whatever. Poor thing.
Anyway, I think the brother realized his revolution recruitment tactics needed work, ’cause after he scared old sis, he kind of sighed, then mumbled something about how we were “all sleeping” and we’d “better wake up before the war starts” or we’ll “all die.”
And he left.
Not just the podium, but the whole building. Picked his coat right up off the chair and was out. I thought that was kind of rude. He wanted people to listen to him, but he couldn’t wait and check out the other poets? The only thing that kept me from thoroughly enjoying the acts after him was the worry in the back of my mind that he was coming back with a bomb.
Next up was “Love Me for Me” girl.
She did two poems. Both were about how men can’t see past her body to “find her soul.”
